Over One-Thousand Tunable White Luminaires Deliver Uniform, Quality Light Across Ten Floors of Retail and Public Space

TDE-lighttech designed, developed and produced unique luminaires in three different sizes to help bring the architects’ vision to life.

The Forum Groningen, a new ten-story multifunctional meeting place, houses a library, art cinemas, an exhibition, restaurant, and study rooms for small groups. It’s also one of the largest public buildings with tunable white luminaires throughout the entire space that can be dimmed to 0.1% and provide continuous dynamic adjustment of the light from 2500K to 4000K throughout the day.

The original design by NL Architects in 2007 called for 1500 fluorescent luminaires. Eight years later, with a desire to improve sustainability, the lighting was redesigned for LED technology that could maintain the linear visual nature of the fluorescent fixtures and produce effects that simply weren’t possible with the original technology.

To convert the original lighting to LED, without visibly affecting the original design, a completely new luminaire had to be developed. After experiments with test set-ups, TDE-lighttech developed an LED luminaire that could achieve the desired light value, guarantee fully uniform brightness and color temperature on a large scale, and met the practical and aesthetic requirements. Everything about the luminaire, such as the housing and the printed circuit board, had to be developed from scratch. The design was refined until it became scalable and easy to produce.

NL Architects, Lichtpunt Theatertechniek, Huisman & van Muijen eldoLED and TDE-lighttech worked closely together through the process of design review, creation of a new luminaire, experimental test set-ups and ultimately installation and commissioning.
